The following questions (Q) have been answered (A) by Professor Ulivi.
Q. How many clients do you have?
A. I have about two dozen ongoing client relationships as of November 2015. My goal is to double that amount and then decide what to do next. Why? I believe in balance; I like to spend time with my wife, my children and my grandchildren. In addition, I like to relax and find some time for solitude and tranquility, so I don’t necessarily want a very active practice. My father was a workaholic, and I swore early in my life that I would lead a different lifestyle.
Q. In addition to being a financial adviser, you are a part time professor of finance at Cal State Dominguez Hills and manage your own real estate. Will you have time for new clients?
A. Yes, I am good at maintaining balance. When I don’t have the time to take care of them like I feel I should, I will stop taking new clients.
Q. When will you retire?
A.I retired from full time teaching in 2012, after a 35 year career. I have an offer to go back one semester a year, which I might continue to do. My financial advisory practice is a different matter. I love the challenge of helping clients achieve their ideal vision of retirement. As a result, I expect to continue to work in my practice at least for another ten years. I have no hobbies, and I love what I do.
Q. What happens if you die? What will happen to your clients?
A. I have a business continuation plan. Basically, if I die while in practice, clients will continue to have full access to, and control of, their accounts, which are held at an independent custodian, TD Ameritrade Institutional.
Q. Who is your typical client?
A. Our typical client is one who says:
“I’m about to retire and I don’t know if I’m going to make it. I don’t want to lose what I have, but I also want to make it grow. How can I maintain my financial security?”
Thus our recommendations tend to be very conservative.
Q. What type of investments do your clients want?
A. Since our clients are conservative, they are not looking for us to “hit home runs.” They would be upset if they lost money, so risk management is very important for us. In other words, I emphasize preservation of capital.
Q. Who supervises the accounts?
A. I personally supervise all accounts.
Q. How much personal attention can you expect?
A. Lots. I am in business to serve you. I’m never farther than a phone call away, and I’m always happy to meet with you in person.
Q. What makes you different from other financial advisors?
A. Here is a list of characteristics that I think differentiate me from other advisors:
- No conflict of interest
- Full disclosure of fees
- Experience
- Education
- Personal track record
- Independent
- Personalized advice
- Stability
